How are we going to do all the cooking? I don't think the kitchen here will fit too many cooks without becoming a old adage.

yeah--we didn't really think that through too well. I think we should just by prepared salads and appetizers and bbq everything else. we could even bbq vegetables on a skewer or somthing...

*buy

That's a good idea. Or we could each buy our ingredients/foods and get cash back on the receipts. That might be a messy paper trail though.

I agree that it would be better to just prepare stuff before hand in our own kitchens (we could probably do a lot better then store bought salads).
Or, if we're really concerned about what separate receipts might mean, I'd be willing to open up my kitchen as a second site of food preparation. It's not that big, but it's very close to Lee's and I have a decent size kitchen table.

I think that's a good idea but I am a bit worried about what happens when we start saving receipts. whoever wants to do this should communicate with sam--he needs to prepare for that and not buy too much at cosco.

With regards the receipt, I don't think we're any of us going to deliberately try to embezzle or cheat the rest of the group.

I think the real worry is just that it might not make for good value for money if everyone is left doing their own grocery shopping, where we could make impluse purchases or forget things in isolation, which could make for some mix-ups or confusion come the party itself.

Should we look into doing at least one group shopping trip to stock up on the essentials?

well perhaps once we get the grocery list established based one everyone's food ideas, we could group shop the morning of or day before and then everyone could prepare food in their respective kitchens and bring it.

I think the bare essentials i.e. meat (including meat substitutes) and main vegetables (corn and roast potatoes) and confectionary should be paid out of the funds. Realistically this will already hit the 150-250 mark depending on the type of meat and also things like spreads/chips/dips/desserts (whole pies?) etc.

I do think bringing dishes is a great idea, but would these really cost more than ten dollars? Why not make any signature dishes voluntary and if any specific dishes require heavier funds (like over 15-20) we should establish funds for those earlier on (meaning I will give you cash and you bring back a receipt). That way we don’t have to worry about running around the day of the party.

Jen has offered her kitchen: so we could cook all the potatoes in foil or boil all the corn in advance and all the meat can be cooked on site but we must also provide Lee with relief for propane or whatever fuel source he uses. So if you want to bring a signature dish, you should be proposing your dish this week so we can tweak the budget. Also what was the number that we all decided on for food and liquor? I forgot.

I know some people said they want steaks but that might not be feasible if the party hits the 30 person mark. At $30 for 4-6 steaks and to be fair 12-14 steaks might cost $60-70 then there is burger meat (30 burgers should be about 30-40 bucks) which will be much cheaper and then meat subs for the vegetarians (20-30 dollars or whatever cost for their desired main course). These foods can be done no problem, but again the extra dishes may have to come out of people’s pockets or we may have to reduce funds for the booze.

Also we don’t want too much food.

I also need volunteers for a committee/group for the day of or day before shopping: like 4-6 people. Here we will have to make the true and final shopping list and dedicate a day to obtaining the goods.

This is getting complicated...

I suggest we keep it simple

a)everyone won't be eating dinner...I can't get there until after 9...and film people are always showing up late for events

b)leftover booze is better than leftover food

With that said in my opinion

no steaks...there expensive and a pain to cook in a mass setting...plus leftover steak=wasted $

Simple BBQ food out of the funds are the easiest to prepare at Lees

A vegetarian option can be obtained via take out. We could even have it delivered to make life easier (I've actually seen catering companies do this)...I doubt there will be many vegan/vegetarians that we don't already know about who will be expecting a full meal on a Friday Night...

Salads...deserts...and others follow a pot luck format. We save ourselves from guessing what people want and avoid leaving a bunch of stuff at Lees house.

There is about 40 paper plates here, so I am not sure if we need any more (if we get more, please no styrofoam). There is also a couple stacks of classic 80s teen movie party cups, so we might be alright on that front too.
